Tourism

Tourism in Albania is still in its infancy. Albania was under a communist regime which did not allow tourism to become established for a long time. It is a country of great natural beauty which includes sandy white Mediterranean beaches, rocky mountains, fertile plains, big and small lakes, natural monuments, and remote, pristine areas.
There are two broad areas for tourism development: Coastal zones, primarily  the area between Velipoja and Karavasta in the north, between Vlora bay to Llogara and Ionian coast to the Greek boarder in the south; and Interior zones, primarily lakes and mountain areas.
In recent years, an increasing number of foreign tourists and real estate propetty investors are visiting Albania.
Albania experienced its highest levels of international tourism in 2007, with the total number of visitors to Albania reaching 1.6 million, an increase of 35% compared to 2006. According to World Travel & Tourism Council, tourism contributed 3.8% to Albania’s GDP in 2006, and estimates that in the next five years tourism contribution to GDP will reach 7.5%.
