Tourist attractions
On the territory of Bulgaria there are hundreds of historical records with national, regional and local importance. Nine of them are of world importance, declared for unique cultural monuments, priceless property not only for Bulgaria, but also for the entire human kind. They are included in the UNESCO’s list of cultural and natural heritage:Kazanluk Thracian Tomb - A Thracian beehive tomb from the end of 4-th – beginning of 3-rd century BC, containing extremely valuable murals, located near the town of Kazanluk in the Valley of Roses.
Sveshtari Thracian Tomb - A Thracian tomb from the beginning of 3-rd century BC, made of cut stone blocks and depicting ritual scenes. The wide frieze of stone panels adorned with ten female figures is an unusual sculptural composition.
Boyana Church – Boyana was one of the thirty-five fortresses and settlements, which formed the fortification systems of the city of Sredets (Sofia). The Boyana Church was build within the fortress. It is about 900 years old and is a magnificent example of medieval architecture and monumental art.
The Madara Horseman - An expressive medieval full-size stone relief depicting a horseman spearing a lion, hewn into a vertical rock beside the town of Shoumen. It symbolizes greatness of the ruler and the power of his state. Europe's only rock relief dating from the early Middle Ages (early 7th century AD).
The Ivanovo Rock Churches – A complex of Bulgarian medieval churches, chapels and monastic cells, cut in the rocks of the Rusenski Lom river. Preserved are valuable mural paintings from 13th century, a unique monument of the Bulgarian Medieval art.
The Old town of Nessebar – An architectural and archeological reserve in the Old part of the town of Nessebar. Combines antique monuments from the time of the anciant Mesemvria with the picturesque Nessebar chirches and typical wooden Black Sea houses.
Rila Monastery – It is the biggest and the most beautiful Bulgarian monastery huddled among the Rila mountain. Founded in 10th century by St. Ivan Rilski – the first bulgarian hermit honored by the Christians as a healer. In its construction works and decoration had participated many talanted builders, icon-painters and wood-carvers from the period of National Revival. The monastery was litterary and educational center during the 15th century.
Sreburna Wildlife Reserve - A shallow lake, located close to the town of Silistra near the Danube river, one of the most interesting and typical wetlands in Europe, abounding in an amazing diversity of plant varieties and animal species.
Pirin National Park - It lies in the highest part of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains - the Pirin Mountain. It has exceptionally rich and varied flora and fauna. Trees between 280 and 1000 years old have been declared natural sites, the oldest one being the 16 meter high Baikousheva white fir which is 1200 years of age. This is also the kingdom of alpine flowers. Glacier lakes, caves, water falls and steep peaks form part of the magnificent scenery.
Great are also the artistic merits of many other unique national monuments, inevitable for the tourists visiting Bulgaria: the picturesque houses and small streets in the Old district of Plovdiv, Veliko Turnovo, the picturesque medieval capital of Bulgaria, steeped with history that extends back for more than 7000 years, the antique and medieval cult center in „Perperikon”, the valley of the Thracian Tsars – a complex of Thracian vaults beside Kazanluk, the queen of the Black Sea and one of the most beautiful bulgarian cities - Varna, the anciant town of Balchik with one of the richest botanical gardens in Europe.
The state capital Sofia is also one of attractive destinations in the country.
